Coffret Warner 55 CD: « The Complete Wilhelm Furtwängler on Record »

Warner has just announced the publication of a 55 CD Album dedicated to all the recordings made by Wilhelm Furtwängler not only for the EMI group, but also for the other labels Polydor, Telefunken, Decca and DGG. It is comprised of studio recordings, but also of live recordings, but only when these were made by EMI (Wagner at Covent Garden en 1937, Bach’s St-Matthew Passion  in Vienna in 1954). This edition includes a certain number of alternate takes, some of them unpublished, but also rehearsal excerpts from Polydor recordings already published by Société Wilhelm Furtwängler (SWF). The broadcast  live recordings already issued by EMI, are not included. However, an unpublished live recording ,about the discovery of which we have informed you,  namely the  « Unfinished Symphony » by Schubert, from a WPO concert given October 1st,  1950 at the  Copenhagen Odd Fellow Palaeet, is offered as a « bonus ». The publication is scheduled for September 24. A primary analysis is here: About the Warner Album.

Looking very much forward to it and curious to see the result of remastering. Last heavy work has been done with Japanese SACD so let’s see what technology has more to bring. This is surfing the wave after great work done by Audite on RIAS broadcasts, very neurtral remastering on Berliner Philarmoniker and very unequal remastering work on latests DGG boxset with a booklet that was far too politically correct and not serving Furtwängler’s greatness. I found the first sample issued some month ago with Beethoven’s 1&3 quite good. Your views on that one?

Genrally speaking, I am interested in music and not in sound. For me, what is really important is the most faithful reproduction of a musical performance. I do not like a Remastering that, for the sake of listening comfort, would remove defects in a way that affects the performance. The problem with digital techniques is that even light treatments are likely to bring bring artefacts that affect the performance.

As to WF, his orchestral sound comes from the bass and you have to be very careful when changing the original tonal balance, which by the way for commercial recordings is what the conductor heard and approved.

Audite is not that neutral. The tonal balance is different from the master tapes and tends toward removing some of the lower medium and bass frequencies, thereby somewhat thinning the acoustics of Titania Palast and the orchestral sound. Compare the 8.12. 1952 Eroïca issued by Audite with the one issued by SWF (downloadable in HD) which is true to the original sound of the master tape.

For its latest boxset, DGG did almost nothing except I think for the Franck Symphony.

I have not heard the sample Beethoven’s 1&3.
